"Last night, as I was sleeping, I dreamt--marvelous error!--That there was a fiery sun here in my heart. It was fiery because it gave warmth as if from a hearth. And it was sun because it gave light and brought tears to my eyes"

                                                                                                              --- Robert Bly

Thirty-seven-year-old Jill Evans is returning home to live with her Mother, with her tail between her legs. After a tumultuous relationship breakup and an unwelcome job transfer, life seems to have ground to an unsatisfying halt. Lonely and fearful, she begins work as a nurse in a psychiatric hospital and struggles to fit into the disturbing and chaotic environment. Minor yet persistent somatic complaints and a recurrent gothic-inspired dream stalk her consciousness. She meets Ren Summers, a friendly but mysterious handyman who frequents her mother's home, arousing suspicion initially, and later romantic intrigue. Meanwhile, at the psychiatric hospital, she meets Glen Edwards, the charismatic leader of a legendary rock band, Golgotha. Edwards has suffered a meltdown on the road, and is facing a crisis in his career, his self image. Drawn to Jill's refreshing honesty and everywoman persona, he pursues her friendship, but is ultimately drawn into her entangling malaise. The sinewy, intermittent dream, which ambiguously casts Jill in the role of a Cinderella-like figure, ushers forth tantalizing fragments from her life, foreboding future events and explicating the past. With unpredictable twists and erratic turns, The Big No: A Novel will hook you as it follows Jill in dealing with childlike regression, unlikely reunions, watershed life decisions, and horror.
